Weave
Hemp's first job was holding things together — cord pressed into Yangshao pottery c. 5000 BCE. Cloth followed, on shaft looms through the millennia: warp threads of long bast fiber, weft passed by shuttle, beaten down with a beater bar. The technique has scarcely changed.
Retting & scutching
Stalks are dew-retted in the field for two to four weeks. Controlled microbes loosen the pectin holding the bast to the woody hurd. Scutching — beating the dried stalk against an edge — separates the long fiber from the chaff. Done well it produces a silver-grey fiber soft enough to spin.

On the loom
Spun yarn becomes warp threads tensioned along the length of the loom. A shuttle carries the weft across, alternating over and under the warp by the harness. The beater bar packs each weft into the cloth. A skilled weaver runs a metre of plain-weave cloth in roughly two to three hours.

The modern revival
HempAge has been making pure hemp clothing in Bavaria since 1995. Toast carries hemp every spring. Patagonia and Levi's WellThread put cottonised hemp into the mainstream after 2019. The cloth got softer; the craft stayed the same.
